Collective compositions are a rarity in the history of music. This makes the German collaborative composition “Jüdische Chronik” (1960/61) by Boris Blacher, Paul Dessau, Karl Amadeus Hartmann, Hans Werner Henze and Rudolf Wagner-Régeny, set to a text by Jens Gerlach, all the more significant. On the one hand, the work addresses the resurgence of anti-Semitism in the late 1950s, which also manifested itself in acts of vandalism against Jewish synagogues; on the other hand, it explores the cultural understanding between East and West in what was then a divided Germany. The speakers provide vivid and exciting new insights into this highly topical work, illustrated with musical examples.
The lecture evening will feature three talks, with a duration of approximately 40 minutes each. There will be a discussion and an opportunity for exchange at the end.

Through our research initiative hartmannforum we support young musicologists in German-speaking countries. The symposium will be repeated on 11 February 2027 at 6.00 pm in collaboration with the Institute of Musicology at Humboldt University in Berlin, as part of the university’s guest lecture series.
